As iAniMagic 2017 continues we’d like to bring you a little inspiration in the form of a user story. In this edition of User Story, meet Sydney Rose, an artistically talented student who hopes to become an animator one day. Sydney uses Animation Desk to add a little spice to her drawings. Anyone who has ever been a student can relate to the struggle of balancing academics, a social life, and hobbies. Despite this, Sydney still finds time for her art. She even runs a small business, Sydnerella, selling/commissioning her works. You can check out her works on Instagram @sydnerellart.
We were interested to learn more about what motivates Sydney to find time in her busy schedule for art. So we asked her a few questions.
When did you first become interested in art and animation?
I’ve loved art since I was a kid. It was my escape from childhood bullies and drama. I was inspired by an animated short by Disney called “Paper Man” to create my own stories and bring them to life.
Can you tell us about your works? Where do you get inspiration?
Artists are never finished growing and developing in their work, and a piece is never truly finished. I’ve learned that there is always room for improvement. I get my inspiration from my beautiful friends and other creators as well! I am a child at heart and even now, I still watch cartoons! My favorites include Steven Universe (a TV series by Rebecca Sugar), Kiki’s Delivery Service (a film produced by Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki), and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ( a film produced by Walt Disney Productions) as well as many others!
You use both pen/paper and digital tools to create your work. How do you feel about the different mediums? Do you find any particular advantages or disadvantages to one method over the other?
I love using both mediums, the same way I love the flavors chocolate and vanilla. They’re both wonderful, but you can only have so much at one time. Sometimes, you want something different!
How do you incorporate the two mediums together?
Right now, I’ve enjoyed animating only small bits and pieces of my work. For example, in one of my witch drawings, I kept everything still except the cat (who was floating above my head!) Little things like that.
Why Animation Desk?
I tried many different apps. Some of them were very complicated, others were too simple and outdated. Animation Desk, however, was a perfect middle. I haven’t mastered everything in Animation Desk (not yet at least) as I am still tinkering with it. So far, I’ve loved seeing my characters and creations coming to life on my screen, and sharing them! With animation, art has truly advanced to a new level beyond traditional styles of creating art.
Do you use any of our other apps?
I have downloaded Write-on Video! It’s a very unique concept, being able to draw on top of videos. It’s the perfect balance of a video editing software + a more drawing-based artistic feature. I recently used it to edit a cover of a song I did.
What truly inspired us from our interview with Sydney’s was her obvious passion for art and life.
“Rarely do I ever get a commission for my art. But when I do, it makes my day! People supporting artists, people supporting people, in fact, makes the world seem a bit brighter.”
